An Overview of the Fire Service and Civil Defense : Mission, and Services
History
The history of the fire service is quite old. It first made its journey in the fiscal year 1939-1940 under British rule. Since then, the Bangladesh Fire Service (Bangla: বাংলাদেশ ফায়ার সার্ভিস) has both evolved and modernized. At present, it operates as an institution under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. But, the fire service started its initial operations in the district in 1982, establishing a second-class station in Naogaon town. It got first class status in 2016-2017 fiscal year.1
Role and Work
The fire service force delivers many services even though it is more commonly known as the institution that fights fires. This includes fire prevention education, rescue operations in any accident, emergency patient transport etc.
Among the hundreds of public service institutions in Bangladesh, Fire Service and Civil Defense is one of the least criticized institutions. When a crisis arrives, this organization is the first to respond to assist the people. The main slogan of this organization is “Speed, Service and Sacrifice” (in Bangla: গতি, সেবা ও ত্যাগ).
